Oh, and the "Woese" joke was painfully wonderful! Puns are like that.

My students groan every time I point out that I get all the culture I need at the bench.

Elio, thank you for an update of one of my favorite "unusual microbes." To know what is going on....well, we will find out eventually!

I wonder if what we are learning about this association will shed light on Chlorochromatium aggregatum! Dr. Overmann's work is beautiful on this subject.

"So happy together," comes to mind!

Mark,

Thanks for your comment on this point and all the others. All of them reveal your love for the prokaryotic world (sensu lato) and the depth of your knowledge.

C. aggregatum has knocked on the door of this blog and will be admitted soon (with proper fanfare).

Fascinating article, Elio! Where else (outside of the sci journals, to which I don't have access) can I find pithy sentences like "It has the distinction of being the only known obligatory anaerobic sulfur-reducing chemolithoautotroph in that group."?

Larry,

It's refreshing to hear from someone who has such a deep appreciation of the microbial world and its quirks without being engrossed in its details. We always love to hear from you.

Elio
