In a recent Friday New York Times puzzle, the definition for 20 Across was: "Legionella and Listeria" — 7 letters. Hint: the first two letters are "ae." The answer is half right.

Aerobes is a good guess. You could also imagine that the answer was "aerosol" as a potential route of transmission. Without the rest of the crossword puzzle it is hard to know. [What was the answer?]
Despite the error, it is great to see microbes infiltrating the crossword puzzles -- one more step toward making the public aware of the importance of microbiology.
My response: The right answer is aerobes. I also thought this was a failry advanced sort of question. I wonder how many microbiologists offhand know the answer.
