Back in the early 60s I gave a course in microbial miscellany at Cornell that included Pilobulus spore case discharge. Growing them in graduated cylinders, the students competed for the longest shooters, and learned that spore cases were shot uppwards at 45° — which, I think, is the angle that gives the greatest distance from ground zero. Fun bugs, even if molds.
