Hey! This is a great paper! Long-time listener to both TWiV and TWiM here, digging around for research into gut-microbe-animal interactions as I'm finding the subject fascinating :-) Do you know whether there's anything in the last few years that's changed or furthered our views in this field?

There is a huge literature already on the gut-microbe interaction (including humans) , with much more in the making. Google away and you'll find it. I haven't seen much on fruit flies.
