I'd argue that the type VI secretion link is very interesting. In Pseudomonas and Burkholderia, these systems can deliver toxins to other bacteria, toxins that the donor strain is resistant to. That type of toxin-antitoxin system may serve as a percursor to this type of finer differentiation of self/non-self.
