by Elio, on behalf of the STC team
We sadly inform you of the death of one of our associate bloggers, S. Marvin Friedman, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Biological Sciences at Hunter College of the City University of New York. He joined the team some 5 years ago and was a steadfast contributor year after year. His most recent post, his 32nd, was published just last month. His microbiological interests extended far and wide, reflecting his familiarity with both prevailing and less common aspects of our science. With a curiosity that ranged from environmental to pathogenic microbiology, Marvin had a special ear for exciting stories. We eagerly followed his suggestions as, invariably, his choices dealt with inspiring and frequently overlooked material, often focusing on the social aspects of bacterial life. His long-standing love and enthusiasm for "considering the small things" were self-evident.
Persons close to him told me that writing for the blog was one of his greatest pleasures in retirement. I am glad that this blog provided the opportunity for him to continue to be creatively involved in his field. Marvin earned our respect and our heartfelt thanks.
